Ampcontrol successfully delivered a major substation for a large underground mining operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The project formed a critical part of the mine’s electrical infrastructure, supporting safe, reliable, and continuous production.
Ampcontrol was responsible for the full scope of design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning. This included the power transformer, medium and low voltage switchgear, and the integrated switchroom; all engineered to meet the demanding power requirements of an underground mining environment.
The project was delivered under a critical and expedited schedule, with Ampcontrol coordinating closely with our customer to meet tight operational timeframes while maintaining high-quality workmanship and technical assurance.
Our customer required a significant power capacity uplift to support current and future operational demands. Ampcontrol was engaged to provide a turnkey solution consisting of:
- A 66/66kV 50/65MVA power transformer designed, engineered and supported by our specialist transformer engineering team.
- Engineering and delivery of incoming and outgoing skid bases, switchgear modules, and substation structural components manufactured and reviewed across Ampcontrol's Tomago, NSW and Mackay, QLD operations.
- Site installation, HV terminations, protection configuration, testing, and energisation support led by Ampcontrol’s Mackay‑based service delivery teams.
This solution provides a robust, mine‑ready substation configuration built for reliability, safety and long‑term performance.
Due to its significant size and rating, the 50/65MVA power transformer was manufactured at our specialised facility in New South Wales and presented logistical challenges, requiring detailed planning and coordination to safely load, transport, and deliver the transformer to site. The entire HV substation infrastructure and control switchroom were constructed at our Queensland operations with all PCS automation, including PLC programming and SCADA configuration, developed in‑house by Ampcontrol’s automation engineering team to ensure seamless integration and control.
The transformer and associated substation infrastructure were fully assembled, installed and commissioned by Ampcontrol’s Mackay-based specialist HV Field Service team, including comprehensive testing and energisation support, providing a reliable power supply to the underground mine. This enabled our customer to commence production with confidence, supported by high-quality, Australian designed and manufactured infrastructure built for long-term performance and reliability.
Through the integrated efforts of Ampcontrol’s engineering, manufacturing, and field service teams, our customer received a fully engineered, factory‑tested, site‑installed and commissioned 65 MVA transformer and substation solution. Key outcomes include:
- Significant increase in site power capacity to meet growing load demand
- Improved network reliability from upgraded protection and control systems
- Reduced installation downtime through coordinated turnkey delivery
- Streamlined project delivery with Ampcontrol as a single accountable provider
