Underground substations are utilised below ground level to distribute power for mining equipment. They save site space compared to their above-ground counterparts and are engineered to be suitable for underground environments, offering greater safety and equipment longevity.  

We manufacture a variety of substations to suit harsh underground environments, including longwall, compact containerised, non-flameproof armoured, hard rock and belt substations. 

Electrical substations help facilitate the safe and reliable transmission of electricity at various voltages. These substations ensure efficient distribution by transforming voltage levels as needed. They serve as essential intermediaries between power generation sources and end-users, contributing to the controlled functioning of the electricity system. 

Beyond voltage transformation, substations act as connection points. Here, powerful transmission lines converge with local distribution networks, facilitating precise control and flexibility within the grid. This ensures stability and controlled maintenance operations. 

Central to a substation's function is the transformer, which helps elevate or reduce voltage and efficiently power transmission over long distances safely.

Substations are the essential conductors within the power grid, controlling the management of electricity flow.  Differentiating with each type of substation, they typically include:

• Transformers:  Devices that elevate or reduce voltage, enabling efficient power transmission across vast distances. 

• Switching and Control Equipment: The monitor and safety mechanisms ensure smooth operation and prevent overloads or surges. Disconnect switches isolate sections for maintenance, while circuit breakers act as fast-acting safeguards against faults.

• Lightning Arresters: These vigilant protectors shield the substation from unexpected surges caused by lightning strikes.

• Control Systems: The substation's "brain" resides in the control building or area, allowing for real-time monitoring and operational adjustments.

While substations are not power generators, they can use capacitors and voltage regulators to optimise performance.
