Substation

An electrical substation is a fixed installation of transformers, switchgear, busbars, protection relays and control equipment that steps voltage up or down, switches circuits, and routes electrical energy through the power grid. Substations sit at every junction between generation, transmission and distribution; converting high voltages to lower voltages so that overhead power lines, underground cables and end-use equipment can each operate safely at the right voltage class.

Each substation site performs a specific job in that chain: a transmission substation steps up generated power for long-distance transport, while a distribution substation steps down the voltage for local supply. The labelled diagram below shows the parts inside a typical substation and where it sits in the network.

Underground substations are installed below ground level to distribute power for mining equipment. They save site space compared with their above-ground counterparts and are engineered for the harsh conditions of underground work- flameproof or non-flameproof armoured construction, IP56 ingress protection, and relocation logistics suited to mining panels. Substations are built around a core set of components: transformers (raise or lower voltage), switching and control equipment (circuit breakers and disconnect switches that route current and isolate faults), and a control system that monitors and operates the station. Capacitors and voltage regulators support voltage stability. Earthing, fencing and exclusion zones protect people and equipment.

A power station - also called a generating station - is where electricity is generated. It converts energy from a source (coal, gas, solar, wind) into electrical energy via generators and feeds it into the transmission system. A substation does not generate electricity; it transforms voltage, switches and protects circuits, and distributes the power onward. Substations are the connection points between generation, transmission and distribution.

A kiosk substation is a compact, ground-mounted distribution unit, supplied as a kiosk or container, used for street-level supply, light industrial sites and confined utility locations.
