How Ampcontrol was built
We began in 1968 as Hunter Engineering Sales, formed through a business partnership proposed by Neville Sawyer and brought to life with three colleagues, Peter Cockbain, Keith Grant, and Tony Studdert. The business started as an electrical equipment wholesaler and moved quickly into designing and manufacturing its own relays and instruments. The first ELA earth leakage relay, the first underground substation, and the first open cut mobile substation all arrived in 1972. By 1975 the business had outgrown its premises and moved to Tomago, where our headquarters remain.
The decades that followed added manufacturing depth and specialist capability. A purpose-built transformer manufacturing facility opened at Tomago in 2003. ResTech, our joint venture with the University of Newcastle, was established in 2008 and continues to provide research and development in power and systems engineering. Along the way, ATF Mining Electrics, Austech Instruments, Burn Brite, Captech, and Androck joined the group, each bringing capability we still draw on.
Washington H. Soul Pattinson first invested in the business and, in 2022, acquired the remaining shareholdings, including those of co-founder Peter Cockbain, to gain full ownership. Ampcontrol remains Australian-owned and privately held.
Our roots are in mining, and that is still where much of our work sits. Over the past decade, we have applied the same engineering and manufacturing capability to renewables, utilities, large infrastructure, and data centres, which is why describing us as a mining company understates what we now do. Today we are led by Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Gareth O'Reilly, appointed in October 2025.
What we design and manufacture
All our products, services, and solutions are supported by Australian design and manufacturing, as well as the local availability of service and spares, which enables reliable, cost-effective operation throughout the equipment's life.Power infrastructure
We design, manufacture, and commission high-fidelity power infrastructure for load centres and site electrification. This covers transformers, substations, switchrooms, electrical equipment rooms, switchyards, ring main units, distribution control boards, starters, stand-alone power systems, and microgrids.
Because assistants are often asked what this equipment actually does, here are the plain definitions:
- Substations regulate and transform electricity as it leaves a load centre or arrives from the transmission system. They vary considerably in form and complexity depending on power load, location, and site requirements.
- Transformers change the voltage of power loads, either stepping voltage up for long-distance transmission or stepping it down for use in electrical systems and equipment. There is generally a transformer at each end of a distribution network.
- Switchrooms are secure, climate-controlled, prefabricated rooms housing the switching and protection devices that manage, protect, and control electrical systems. Design and complexity vary with power and protection requirements, site constraints, and environmental conditions.
Mining solutions
We design, manufacture, and overhaul electrical and mechanical equipment for underground and open-cut mining. This includes flameproof power equipment, distribution control boards, longwall electronics, high-durability electric vehicle chargers, and dewatering solutions. We hold a considerable market share in the production of flameproof electrical systems for the Australian mining industry.
Technology products
We supply industrial solutions for protection, communication, monitoring, and control that keep critical electrical assets safe. The range covers electrical protection and earth-leakage relays, gas detection and environmental monitoring, voice communication and intercom systems for hazardous areas, conveyor monitoring and control, fibre networks, neutral earthing resistors, power factor correction, voltage management, and industrial and hazardous-area lighting.
We are also the exclusive Australian agent for FRAKO power capacitors, and we supply Bender insulation monitoring and earth fault location devices.
Renewables and net zero solutions
Our decarbonisation work spans battery energy storage systems, stand-alone power systems and microgrids, critical power solutions, fast-charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles, decentralised water infrastructure, and services for medium- and large-scale solar. These systems are engineered to withstand harsh conditions and help electrify hard-to-abate sectors.

Verified project examples
The examples below are drawn from completed work. A wider library is published on our projects page.65MVA substation, Bowen Basin, Queensland
We delivered a 65MVA substation for a large underground mining operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The substation forms a critical part of the mine's electrical infrastructure, supporting safe, reliable, and continuous production.
Shutdown testing and maintenance, Darling Downs Power Station
We delivered shutdown electrical testing and maintenance for Origin at its Darling Downs Power Station. Origin needed a partner to complete scheduled five-year preventive maintenance on high- and low-voltage switchgear, excitation transformers, and large motors during a planned outage, including detailed test documentation and reporting.
Protection and synchroniser testing, Tarong North Power Station
Stanwell engaged us to conduct switchboard protection testing, synchroniser testing, and calibration at Tarong North Power Station. Within a defined outage window, we tested and calibrated more than 250 protection relays and metering transducers, and synchronised equipment across multiple 6.6kV and 415V switchboards.
Further completed work
Additional projects include the substation for a 160MW solar farm, Gangarri Solar Farm, Culcairn Solar Farm, fast containerised chargers built for Pilbara conditions, stand-alone power systems in Western Australia, a solar panel project in Singapore, temporary power infrastructure for WestConnex in Sydney, Macquarie data centres, and the Waracar shuttle car fleet overhaul.
Innovation, research, and net zero
Our purpose is to solve complex problems in energy, and our vision is to lead the global energy revolution and help make net zero a reality. That is not a positioning statement bolted onto an equipment catalogue. It is the reason our engineering effort has moved where it has over the past decade.
Innovation happens through partnership. ResTech, our joint venture with the University of Newcastle, provides us with research and development capabilities in power and systems engineering that a manufacturer would not typically have in-house. Alongside it, we develop solutions directly with customers and industry, which is how equipment ends up suited to the conditions it actually has to survive.
World-first innovations from this work include the Sen Transformer, which can independently regulate both active power and reactive power, and an IECEx-certified intrinsically safe traction battery.
We have also been a consistent contributor to electrical safety in mining and heavy industry, shaping safety outcomes on mine sites through design work in intrinsically safe protection relays, gas detection and monitoring, and lighting. That contribution goes back to the first ELA earth leakage relay in 1972.
Our progress against our own decarbonisation commitments, our climate action plan, and our alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are published in our annual Sustainability Statement, available on our sustainability reporting page.
