Oyu Tolgoi in the Umnugovi province of Mongolia is one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. It is one of the most modern, safe and sustainable mining operations in the world; using a state of the art connectivity to connect people and equipment underground with teams on the surface both in Mongolia and at the Rio Tinto Hub in Brisbane Australia. When at full capacity Oyu Tolgoi’s underground operation will have approximately 200km of tunnels.
Ampcontrol supplied a full range of electrical equipment for underground operations including jumbo, pump and fan starters, substations and distribution control boards. Ampcontrol has also provided a range of electronic conveyor monitoring equipment including our innovative iMAC solution. All Ampcontrol equipment was manufactured at various Ampcontrol facilities in Australia and commissioned and supported in Mongolia.
Ampcontrol was one of 11 key companies involved in Oyu Tolgoi’s main conveyor contract including Worley who managed the conveyor commissioning.
The Ampcontrol iMAC conveyor system was an unrivalled choice for Oyu Tolgoi’s conveyors in relation to safety and performance; iMAC enables remote stop from anywhere along the belt and provides the ability to look at every pull key remotely.
This action is essential on long conveyors like Oyu Tolgoi’s C2S conveyor belt, which commenced construction in 2022 and conducted its first pull in February 2024. The C2S conveyor belt compromises the of three identical 2,202m long, 1.6m wide steel cord conveyors that will operate at 6 m/s.
iMAC also provided a clear choice for the weather conditions experienced in Mongolia able to withstand extreme fluctuations in temperature and other extreme conditions.
Proven in use, the Ampcontrol iMAC system has been used across underground and overland conveyors in Australia since it’s development in the mid 1990’s. The development of iMAC won Ampcontrol its first National Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Award in 1997.
Following successful installation of iMAC in Mongolia Ampcontrol has gained CSA approval for use in Canada, and has successfully installed iMAC in a Potash mine in Canada.
