Origin engaged Ampcontrol to deliver shutdown electrical testing and maintenance at its Darling Downs Power Station, a gas-fired combined-cycle power station located approximately 40 km west of Dalby, Queensland.
The site comprises three gas turbines and a steam turbine, supplying electricity into the Queensland grid. Origin required a partner to complete scheduled five-yearly preventive maintenance on high-voltage and low-voltage switchgear, excitation transformers, and large motors during a planned outage, supported by detailed test documentation and reporting.

Our Townsville high voltage and switchgear technicians completed a broad scope of testing and maintenance over a two-week shutdown, including:
Planning and documentation
- Development of test plans, test procedures and a program of works
- Job safety and environmental risk analysis for each task
High-voltage switchboards and motor starters
- Five-yearly preventive maintenance of 6.6 kV process distribution centre switchboards and associated circuit breakers
- Inspection, cleaning and testing of high voltage motor starter cubicles
Excitation transformers and current transformers
- Five-yearly maintenance and electrical testing of gas turbine and steam turbine excitation transformers
- Inspection and testing of spare high voltage current transformers
Low-voltage distribution equipment
- Five-yearly maintenance of low-voltage switchgear, motor control centres and circuit breakers
- Functional testing to confirm correct operation and protection performance
High-voltage motors
- Preventive maintenance and electrical testing of boiler feed pump high-voltage motors
Reporting and analysis
- Analysis of test results against performance standards, manufacturer data and engineering references
- Delivery of a comprehensive outage report for Origin’s asset management and compliance records
