Beyond Zero Emissions: Powering Up The Hunter

We know that the Hunter is well placed to lead the global energy revolution, but is the region ready? We have collaborated with independent think tank Beyond Zero Emissions since 2020, and we are wholeheartedly lending our support to their first regional readiness assessment under Beyond Zero Emissions bold new National Action Plan.

From Beyond Zero Emissions:

Powering Up The Hunter evaluates the Hunter’s readiness to become a major green industrial exporter and unlock clean jobs, measuring progress across 19 key indicators and identifying the critical steps to secure a prosperous, zero-emissions future.

The results are clear: 17 indicators are lagging. Critical delays in renewable energy project approvals, transmission infrastructure (like the Hunter Transmission Project) and a lack of support for local manufacturers are holding the region back.

The global shift to green commodities presents a major opportunity for the Hunter’s industries to secure their competitive edge and drive new job creation. Renewable energy is needed to both modernise our existing industries and build new clean export revenue as global demand for coal exports in the region declines.

We know that the resources, infrastructure, and willingness is here in the Hunter—but there is a lot of red tape in the way that halts the progress. Collaboration is the key to moving forward, and it’s up to industry, government, and the community to work together.

We need fast, coordinated action to unlock the Hunter’s potential and lead Australia’s clean energy transition.
