New Careers for the next Generation Part 2

We recently opened our Kewdale site in Western Australia, which not only allowed us to grow our operations but also provided Alex Stamenkovski, Ampcontrol Graduate Engineer, with the opportunity to complete the first interstate rotation. Here, Alex shares his experience during his rotation in Western Australia.

Tell us a little bit about your rotation in Western Australia (WA)

AS: “The first week of my rotation was spent supporting the Curtin University Sustainability Challenge and participating in the subsequent engagement events. I also met the Ampcontrol Kewdale team and was briefed on the projects I would be working on.

The projects I joined were within the utilities and solutions teams, working on our stand-alone power system solutions for the WA utilities.

Was the rotation a smooth process?

AS: “The rotation process and travel were simple and easy. I was provided with a work van to drive while I was in Perth, which made getting around convenient.”

What were the highlights of the WA rotation?

AS: “The highlights of my rotation were meeting and working with new people and exploring a new city during my evenings and weekends. The team I worked with was very welcoming and always willing to offer help and support when I needed it.”

Tell us about what you learned from the WA team

AS: “I learned a lot about the design and build of stand-alone power systems and the engineering design and manufacturing process, which I can transfer to other work in the future. It was a  valuable experience being part of an operating business unit and seeing the designs I work on materialised in the adjacent workshop facility. I also valued the experience of communicating and working with external clients and working through an iterative design process to arrive at a suitable solution.”

What support did you receive while completing your rotation?

AS: “I received support and regular check-ins from the People and Strategy teams in Tomago, NSW. Both teams provided support and guidance if I needed it”.

The team in Kewdale, WA, was also supportive and provided me with continuous guidance on any tasks I was unfamiliar with. I also formed friendships and spent time with my team outside work, which further improved my overall experience.”

What rotation would you do next if you could, and why?

AS: “I would look to do a rotation in Mackay, QLD or Ringwood, VIC, as I saw a lot of value in being immersed in a new part of the business and seeing how the culture and operations differed from what we have here in NSW. I think gaining that insight and bringing it back to our Newcastle operations is valuable and I can now foster a stronger link between our locations via the relationships I formed during my rotation.”
