Optimise Energy Use:

Various power storage technologies are available, including Thermal Energy Storage (TES), which captures and stores heat for later use in heating, cooling, or industrial processes. Battery Storage allows for the storage and utilisation of intermittent renewable energy and managing peak demand. Other technologies like compressed air, hydrogen, and pumped hydro storage offer large-scale energy storage solutions. Integrating these with smart grids enables better energy distribution and management while capturing and reusing waste heat, further maximising energy efficiency.

Improved Resource Usage:

Resource usage can be optimised through recycling, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable packaging. This approach actively promotes the circular economy, a model focused on keeping resources in use for as long as possible. By prioritising reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling, the circular economy aims to minimise waste and pollution. 

Embracing these principles can contribute to achieving all 17 SDGs, particularly those focused on climate action, sustainable consumption and production, and responsible resource management. Importantly, these changes are not just about meeting regulations; they also offer significant cost savings. As an example, within the mining industry, transitioning to renewable energy sources can lead to energy cost reductions of up to 30%  (World Economic Forum, 2024). 

Potential Challenges

Initial Investment:

For Australian manufacturers, the ongoing cost of energy is a significant concern impacting their bottom line and international competitiveness. While integrating renewable energy sources offers a promising path towards cost reduction and stability in the long term, the initial investment and infrastructure upgrades required can present immediate financial hurdles.

This includes areas like data analytics, automation control, and cybersecurity. Developing and delivering effective training programs requires both financial resources and time, posing a challenge for manufacturers, particularly SMEs, who may have limited capacity for such investments. 

Non-compliance Concerns:

While the specific requirements for mandatory Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting are still evolving in Australia, the global trend and increasing local focus is clear. Establishing new data collection, analysis, and reporting systems can be resource-intensive. Non-compliance or inadequate reporting carries the risk of financial penalties, regulatory breaches, and a negative impact on investor confidence, potentially leading to lost investment opportunities. 

Supply Chain Fragility:

Supply chain fragility has been one of the main setbacks, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 60% of manufacturers now report output delays, which affect production schedules and increase costs due to transportation, shortages, and trade tensions due to increasing regulations (Pattens, 2025).
