Our first 1440kW containerised charger has arrived in WA, Pilbara-bound. Built in our specialised workshop, and engineered for high heat, dust, and remote operations, this solution supports our customers’ transition to electric mining fleets.
BACKGROUND
As part of its decarbonisation program, Fortescue (FMG) required a suite of charging solutions to support the electrification of its mining fleet in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This included chargers for both Light Mobile Equipment (LME) and Support Mobile Equipment (SME), essential for large-scale mining operations. The project required specialised engineering design, installation, and control systems capable of delivering reliable and renewable power in harsh and remote environments. The solution needed to support everything from high‑capacity fast charging to smaller systems suited to light vehicles.
The full delivery scope includes eleven (11) chargers across three size classes:
- 360kW in a 14ft container
- 720 kW in a 20ft container
- 1440 kW in a 40ft container
SOLUTION
To deliver this advanced solution, Ampcontrol collaborated with ABB, incorporating their proven air‑cooled charging technology into our fully engineered, containerised format.
Through detailed engineering analysis and customer consultation, Ampcontrol identified liquid‑cooling technology as the preferred solution to meet requirements for Ingress Protection, ambient operating temperature, mining safety regulations, earthing systems, and electrical separation.
Leveraging our extensive engineering expertise, product development capability, and practical application experience, Ampcontrol engineered a suite of next-generation charging infrastructure designed to withstand the extreme Pilbara environment. Our containerised charger design provides a transportable alternative to traditional switchrooms, enabling rapid deployment, scalability, and reusability across multiple sites.
Key deliverables:
- Australian, designed, manufactured in our specialised Tomago workshop in NSW
