Auto transformers, unlike power transformers, have an electrically connected primary and secondary circuit.
The primary and secondary circuits therefore have a number of winding turns in common resulting in smaller and lighter weight units than a power transformer for a given rating.
Auto transformers are frequently used in power applications to interconnect systems operating at different voltage classes, for example 132kV to 66kV for transmission.
