The World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House is one of Australia’s busiest tourist and cultural precincts in Australia, welcoming around 8.2 million visitors every year.
To ensure the continued safety of pedestrians at the Opera House the Australian Government initiated a Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety (VAPS) Project, which included moving large vehicle access at the site to underground tunnel access freeing up the Opera Houses’ forecourt for safer pedestrian usage.
Ampcontrol’s power hire solutions equipment was used to provide temporary power equipment for the excavation of the new underground vehicle access tunnel and power the ventilation system throughout the projects construction period.
Ampcontrol’s contribution to this national landmarks’ project involves the supply of the following power hire solutions equipment:
- Surface weatherproof 415V switchboard
- Generator switchboard with IP65 protection
- 4 x 415V underground DCB to power the roadheaders and dust extractors
- Link Box with circuit breakers
- 820m of high voltage cables including 150mm rubber and 240mm XLPE cables
- 220m low voltage underground feed cable
- 2 x 1400kVA 415/1000V step-up substations
As the Sydney Opera House remains fully operational throughout the construction the safety of the personnel, equipment and the iconic landmark is paramount. Safeguarding the protection of this project, Ampcontrol’s onsite engineering teams conducted extensive earth grid testing, load flow and protection studies when installing and commissioning our power hire equipment to the site, securing the safety of the underground system and ensuring the project meets Australian Standards.
